About the HMA

What we do

We participate in numerous activities centred around mountains/hills and crags including:

  • Rock climbing – single pitch, multipitch, traditional, sport and indoor
  • Hill Walking
  • Mountaineering

We normally average two outdoor meets each month during the spring, summer and autumn.

We informally meet up at the Chichester climbing wall on most Monday and Thursday evenings, and at the Parthian Southamption wall on Wednesday evenings.

Who are we?

We are a smallish group of people over a wide range of ages and professions, both single and married with both male and female members at most meets.

We’re a mixed ability club and welcome new members. The majority of members climb at the lower grades (VS & below / 6a & below), some of the younger or more athletic members climb into the lower ‘E’ grades and low 7s. Others, equally welcome, are happiest on a V.Diff or 4. We trend towards traditional ‘adventure’ climbing, although we do climb on bolts in the UK and Europe. Most of our meets focus around pure rock climbing, but there may be people walking at the same time.

History

We formed around 1971, as the Hampshire Teachers Mountaineering Association, in Southampton. The ‘Teachers’ part was later dropped, leaving the club’s present name. We currently have a membership upwards of 50 people, from a wide age range, career background and location. Most of us live and work in southern Hampshire or West Sussex, although some live or work farther afield. We are a club affiliated to the British Mountaineering Council.
